It's that time again, Picture Of the Month-December!

Look inside for the photo with most views and fav's as well as this month's 5 best POD's

It's that time again... Picture of the month! If you are wondering what I am talking about or missed last month's you can find it here. Sorry that this one is coming late, I am just recovering from my turkey coma from the holidays.

We had a stand out this month, it had the most views and most favs and was in the top five. The image I am talking about was brought to us by robinkitchin of Danny Macaskill. This image had 46764 views and 1807 favs when POM was constructed.

Though it had the most exposure, the picture of the month formula (views/faves) did not put it on the top spot this month. With that being said let's see what images made the top five POD's of December.

Number 5-

This photo was uploaded by hermo44 and shot by Marc Landry. This photo had 28102 views and 1039 favs bringing its total to 27.04

Number 4-

The photo with the most favs and views comes in at number 4 on our count down. 46764 views and 1807 favs brings its score to 25.87

Number 3

jzuck claims this HDR image or did he tone map it? Sorry I will stop geeking out now. This photo had 38913 views and 1598 favs for a total of 24.35

Number 2

Submitted by swich-cz, this massive whip and good photography earned him 30118 views and 1305 favs, bringing his total to 23.0789

This month's winner is Ian MacLennan.

35464 views/1537 favs=23.0735 Winning by only .0054. Good job on this photo Ian and to everyone else who had a POD this month.

@Waldon83 the truth is that most eyes look cool&determined in fullface and goggles. and thats mostly becasue you don't see "faces". most of those hardcore racing pics wouldn't be so cool if you were able to see faces that most ppl do Wink

Great wee blog update thing with nice statistics but... it's not very accurate really, you can only fave a pic once but you can look at it more than once, what if someone really likes the pic and keeps viewing it? that throws the average off and same goes for each time the person that uploaded the photo views it if they are proud of it or checking up comments etc.

It was a great day I spent with Danny -drove 800 miles the evening before from the south coast of England to just below Edinburgh, slept in my camper freezing cold for a couple of hours and then hooked up with Danny at some of his fav street spots.
This was shot a month or so after his video went viral across the internet and he was just starting to get recognised in the streets by the public - 'You're the guy off the computer!!'.
The move photographed here is one he had being eying up for a while - his aim was too make the road off this very weird and unpredictable edge. With a small gap in the traffic he exploded from stationary on top of the phone box...incredible to witness and a true honor to be get this sequence. He's a true artist.
Thanks for all the fav's - lets look forward to another amazing month on Pinkbike!!

There were quite a few 'this is photoshopped!!' comments with image - obviously to create the sequence they were spot on!! However, that wasn't there point and I need to reveal a truth; having shot this portrait (wanted to use my new 135mm and couldn't get far enough away in the hectic streets to shoot it the obvious landscape) I needed too track a bit with Danny. Unfortunately I also tracked down a touch which left a hole at the top right of the image, hence the building there has been witness to my architectural license and has some very Gaudi'ish window placements. Sorry. For the record though - I did not touch up Danny!

POM has a completely different meaning in Australia (being an ex-pat) POM is short for Pommy, and is a derogative term we use for Englishman... Too Funny... That said this is a sick spread of shots... I am all over the whip.... gettin sideways is what it is all about... Wink

veiws/faves. this means that more faves lowers the score?

yes and the lowest score wins, its like golf

flag mtbman1980 (Jan 15, 2010 at 14:23)
not sure if that is the best way to calculate POM. Pic 3 had more views and more favs than #1 or #2 but didnt win. I dont fav every pic I like. Could pinkbike put in a thumbs up or down for the pic like they do for comments that would be better way of keeping track of the most popular pic.

If you can think of a better system that uses the PB options in place I will think about switching the way I do this. But right now I think it is the most accurate way I can do it.

flag mtbman1980 (Jan 15, 2010 at 14:45)
Personally right now I would have to say that looking at the number of favorites is more accurate of which is the more popular photo.

flag ijustride (Jan 16, 2010 at 4:28)
j-peters if lowest score wins then if a photo has more veiws its score is worse? i think possibly multiplying them would be better? and highest score wins
  • + 1
flag Bug5532 (Jan 16, 2010 at 6:30)
Yer multiplying would make much more sense, at least then the pic with most views and favs would win, atm the whole thing is wrong!

why dont you all just chill and check out some sick shots! Jason is doin this for us so that we can all enjoy and you guys are on here ripping him a new one cuz you dont like his system? when is the last time you went and did something like this for everyone to enjoy? I dont think you have

flag ijustride (Jan 16, 2010 at 14:02)
yeah i agree its wicked to have something like this. I really enjoyed the article i was just pointing out that the system for selecting the winners wasnt perfect. It still got some sweet shots though!

flag j-peters Plus (Jan 16, 2010 at 14:26)
I dont think I could use a perfect system to make everyone happy, but I personally think this one is the best
  • + 1
flag Bug5532 (Jan 17, 2010 at 6:49)
sorry I didnt mean to rip it, but obviously the system is flawed if the picture that gets the most fews and favourites dosnt get number 1!
I still think multiplying would be the best method, as then a pic which loads of people thought was very good (so faved it) would get a high score even if not as many people had viewed it. But then a pic that looked good from the preview thumbnail so got alot of fews, but then turned out not to be as good as it looked (so got less favs) would do less well. I hope that makes sense.
But actually thinking about it I guess your system does work, as your doing favs per view, so after all that actually, your system is prob the best, lol, sorry about that!
